The Last Song

Cuando ya se había anunciado la disolución de X Japan, The Last Song apareció en el álbum Ballad Collection lanzado en 1997.12.19 (doce días antes del Last Live). La canción fue interpretada en el Last Live de nuevo. Después de la separación de la banda, en 1998.03.18, Yoshiki lanzó la canción en sencillo como el último de la banda, con una escena del Last Live como portada.

Análisis

The Last Song, en resumen, es una canción sobre un final y una continuación. Puede tomarse como un recuento de la historia de X, o como el sentimiento personal de Yoshiki del fin de la banda. La frase 'owaranai ame dakishimeta' (endless rain embraced me) nos recuerda aquellas líneas de Endless Rain en que nos empapamos de emociones, lágrimas y esperanza. La noche alcanza a la mañana... es decir, la página da la vuelta, se abre el próximo capítulo. X Japan termina, y con él muchas canciones de cuestionamientos y lágrimas.

Si escuchamos a Toshi cantar la canción en vivo, se nota un gran énfasis en decir las palabras "sólo estoy lastimado, lastímame" preguntándose por qué sigue preguntando la respuesta que debió haber entendido ya. Yoshiki retoma la voz de la canción, "I see red" significa "Estoy enojado". Y "I see blue" significa "Estoy deprimido" o "Estoy solitario".

"But the silver lining gradually takes over, when the morning begins, I'll be in the next chapter". Esto se refiere al proverbio "Every cloud has a silver lining". Significa que hay alegría al reverso del sufrimiento. Yoshiki recita con su voz las líneas en inglés, y Toshi entra con todo sentimiento a cantar. El soneto de piano es sencillo, pero la canción fue hecha en poco tiempo y no pretende ser una gran composición, simplemente sirve para plasmar el sentimiento de X al desintegrarse. Tal vez no sólo de X, sino de cualquier cosa.
